Have you ever discovered a piece of media right when you needed it most? That was me yesterday, stumbling upon this video by YouTuber Sean Chandler as I was scrolling Instagram, desperately trying to find a topic for today’s newsletter. In the video, he answers the question,

“Why are so many streaming movies generic slop when so many streaming shows are prestigious?”

Naturally, I took that as a sign from the universe telling me what topic to cover in today’s edition of Worth the Watch: The death of streaming original movies. Yes, the headline is a bit hyperbolic, but there is a real, noticeable shift happening across the streaming landscape that is worth paying attention to.

Both of the above videos expertly tackle why the quality of streaming original movies has nosedived. But they don’t paint a clear picture of why the quantity of streaming original movies has also drastically diminished. As the resident movie nerd at Pix, I figured it’s my duty—nay, my calling—to toss my hat in the ring and break down why we don’t see as many streaming original movies as we used to.
