5 Five-Star Books I’m Certain You Haven’t Read
Hi, {{first_name | friend}}! Welcome back to Worth the Read!
If you're like me, you've gotten used to seeing—and, let's be honest, giving—the same book recommendations over and over again. The popular picks are popular for a reason, and I'll happily give them when they're the right fit. But if you're here, you're probably looking for picks that are less obvious, too. (We all agree The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is the perfect reading-slump-buster, but that’s the problem—it already busted our slumps!)
So today, I dug into the depths of my bookshelves to bring you five personal favorites that I never see recommended anywhere.
In fact, I'm so confident you haven't read these books that I'm making a bet: If you reply to this email and tell me you've read one of them, I'll let you nominate a title for us to highlight in a future edition of Worth the Read.
Deal?
If you love magic, Shakespeare, racing against time, Southern subcultures, power struggles, and romance that breaks your heart...
Mama Day
By Gloria Naylor
If you’ve read anything by Gloria Naylor, it’s probably her National Book Award–winning The Women of Brewster Place, which was later adapted into a miniseries by Oprah. But while Brewster Place finds the remarkable in everyday life, Mama Day makes the mystical feel down-to-earth.
This novel follows a young couple, Cocoa and George, from their whirlwind romance in NYC to Cocoa's family home off the coast of Georgia. When Cocoa suddenly falls ill, they find themselves caught between George's faith in logic and the healing magic of Mama Day, Cocoa's formidable great-aunt.
Please believe me when I say this is one of the most hauntingly romantic novels I’ve ever encountered.
