5 cozy fall picks you’re missing out on
Sure, there’s technically one full week left of summer. But in our post-Labor Day reality, where I’m sipping on a pumpkin spice latte (every year I realize they’re actually good), picking up my favorite Trader Joe’s fall lunch (the butternut squash mac and cheese, IYKYK), and watching the leaves come down with the rain, it’s decidedly fall, at least over here in the PNW.
As a mood watcher, I’m happy to finally unlock those fall vibes in my watchlist too. Three of my all-time favorite movies have peak autumnal vibes: Pride & Prejudice, You’ve Got Mail, and Silver Linings Playbook, and I’m ready for my annual rewatch. Give me Meg Ryan walking through the Upper West Side with a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils or a Jane Austen character walking through a misty field, and I’m happy.

But before you turn to your fall go-tos, I implore you to try one of these cozy fall movies (and 1 TV show) that haven’t received the attention they deserve. And because it’s me, you can expect a romantic comedy or two, plus family dramas, a murder mystery, and endless sweater inspo to watch this week.

Bad Sisters

The five Garvey sisters have always been incredibly close, bound together by the premature deaths of their parents and a promise to always protect one another. But when one sister, Grace, marries the controlling and increasingly cruel John Paul, the other four become convinced there’s only one way to get their sister back: he has to die.
Autumn credentials: The show is set in Ireland and provides another coastal autumn mood board: chunky knits, post-polar-plunge sauna sessions, gray skies, dramatic coastlines, rainy afternoons, dark pubs, and sisters drinking wine around a kitchen table while plotting a man’s demise.
Cue “Goodbye, Earl” by The Chicks. This show has a bit more bite than the average cozy mystery, but it’s the comedic relief, the bonds of sisterhood, and the increasingly awful John Paul that somehow have us cozying up to murder.
Sharon Horgan, the show’s creator and one of the Garvey sisters, has a new series out this weekend on HBO Max called Youth, so it’s an especially timely moment to jump aboard the Horgan Train. (Catastrophe on Prime Video is another excellent comedy.)
