Hi, {{first_name | friend}}!

Healing fiction: the genre you didn’t know you were looking for

As autumn rolls in with earlier sunsets and crisper air, I find myself craving cozier stories again. After all the sun-soaked glamour, romance, and mayhem that summer’s blockbusters bring, fall asks us to slow down and look inward as we prepare for winter’s darkness. For many readers (myself included), that means stories that feel soothing, hopeful, and restorative.

Of course, “cozy” looks a little different for everyone, but according to good ol’ Merriam-Webster, it means “enjoying or affording warmth and ease.” For me, that looks like low-stakes stories, sweet characters, and worlds where nothing too bad can ever happen. (Even in cozy mysteries, the crime can never be too gruesome or disturbing.) I also love a little magic, especially when it’s used to make lives easier.

So, when the calendar turned to September, I set out to find books that checked all of my boxes. And, would you know it, instead I found an entire genre that does. Best surprise ever? Meet my (our?) new fall obsession: healing fiction.

Okay, “found” might be a bit of a stretch, because I’ve known about plenty of these books for years. I just didn’t realize they belonged to a genre with its own name and conventions. I’d always lumped them into a vague magical realism bucket, but lo and behold, they’ve got their very own table in the lunchroom. And I have a feeling you might recognize some of them, too.

Healing fiction is a subgenre of literary fiction that originated in Japan and Korea and has only recently taken the English-language market by storm. These novels follow ordinary people as they navigate ordinary problems and find comfort through routine, connection, acceptance, and forgiveness. There’s often a sprinkling of magic, whether it’s a mysterious place, object, or animal, and you’ll frequently encounter a wise figure who helps guide the characters along the way. The stories tend to be episodic, making them easy to enjoy in small bursts, and some kind of emotionally healing conclusion is pretty much guaranteed.

Oh, and did I mention there’s a heavy focus on warm beverages, books, and cats? Lots and lots of cats?

If all of that sounds like your idea of cozy, keep reading to see exactly which titles I’ve added to my TBR, along with one I’ve already read and highly recommend. And because cats are practically a requirement of healing fiction, I’m including a picture of my own orange boy, Oscar, at the very end. You know, as a treat.
