Welcome back to Worth the Watch. When’s the last time you watched a dinosaur movie that isn’t a part of the Jurassic Park franchise? Some of you may have had the misfortune of watching that horrendous Adam Driver-led dinosaur movie from a few years ago called 65, but I’d predict most of you haven’t seen an original dinosaur movie in quite a long time. It seems odd, doesn’t it? There are hardly any new, big-budget dinosaur movies, even though the subject seems like a surefire way to print money at the box office.

I recently watched a YouTube video from Patrick Willems titled Why Aren't There More Dinosaur Movies? In it, he examines the history of dinosaur movies in cinema, why nearly all modern-day dinosaur movies are part of the Jurassic franchise, and how modern filmmakers could break away from the standard monster tropes to revitalize this sub-genre that audiences desperately want more of.

Director David Robert Mitchell (It Follows, Under the Silver Lake) must’ve also been watching (and taking notes), because he just delivered an original, fresh take on the dinosaur genre in his latest film, The End of Oak Street.
