What upcoming fall and winter releases are you most looking forward to reading?
JH: My Fall pick is taking me back to my dystopian girlie era! The Sixth Faction by Veronica Roth releases October 6th and is the newest book from the Divergent series (yep, THAT series from 15 years ago). I loved dystopian books when I was younger and was always fascinated by the idea of life in a different world. When I saw we were getting a new Divergent story, I was intrigued. But the fun part is, it’s not a prequel or a sequel. It kicks off a duology set in an alternate timeline where Tris (main character) makes a different faction choice… how will that change life as she knows it?! I feel like the kid in me who grew up in the Give Yourself Goosebumps era is going to LOVE this!
And my Winter pick…. While I love true crime TV, crime fiction has my heart when it comes to reading because I need closure! Give me the clues, the plot twists, the red herrings… then tell me who did it, please! Patricia Cornwell is one of my favorite crime fiction authors and I’m excited for her new book, Rapid and Fatal, part of the Scarpetta thriller series, coming in January 2027! I love how Cornwell weaves her real-life forensic science experience into her thrillers.
With my son finally getting a short break from sports, I will be cozied up this January with Rapid and Fatal, biting my nails, helping Scarpetta catch a serial killer!!
What have you learned from working with libraries?
JH: First, I had no idea libraries were so fun! I have fond memories of listening to audiobooks and watching puppet shows as a child, but libraries are so much more. I’ve toured libraries with amazing Maker Spaces comprised of 3D printers, sewing machines, music studios, and more… Workforce training tools that include VR simulators and full commercial-grade kitchens (mind blown). Aside from the cool gadgets, I’ve learned that libraries are welcoming spaces for people from all walks of life to access free information and receive unbiased and compassionate support.
Libraries play such an important role in strengthening their communities, and ThriftBooks is proud to support them. I love being a liaison between ThriftBooks and libraries across the country. With libraries constantly facing budget challenges and rising costs, it’s incredibly rewarding to help provide extra funding through their weeding projects or make their budgets stretch further with discounted new and pre-owned titles. Knowing that our work helps libraries continue serving their communities is always a great feeling.
The Big Idea
Something fun you can put to work at your library ASAP
Fall vibes + ACOTAR = perfection
We still don’t have a title or a cover image for the upcoming sixth A Court of Thorns and Roses novel hitting shelves on October 27, but that doesn’t mean the hype isn’t hyping! Bloomsbury recently released a guide to hosting an “Autumn Equinox Party,” featuring discussion ideas, recipes, and games for ACOTAR fans. Host a party on the equinox itself—September 22—or use the ideas for some fantasy fun anytime!
