Hollow Bones

Pix Media’s resident bookworm Genevieve Nierman read Hollow Bones in one day, staying up until 2:30 a.m. to finish. Then, she went straight to the source. Read her conversation with Jodi Picoult below!
GN: Hollow Bones spends a lot of time with people whose job is to prepare for the absolute worst-case scenario. What kind of research did you do into the world of emergency preparedness?
JP: I shadowed Alysia Mihalakos, the actual director of emergency preparedness and response for the state of Rhode Island. She has done everything from the entire COVID vaccine rollout to evacuating seniors from nursing homes when there’s a blizzard. I watched her run training triage exercises for nursing students. What surprised me the most is that the things we take for granted are exactly the things that Alysia has to think about: like how to evacuate hospitals and neonatal ICUs—terrible, terrible “what ifs” that you and I don’t think about, because Alysia (and Molly!) do.
