Genevieve’s 5 Picks

A 5-star-worthy book you’d recommend to anyone?

I firmly believe everyone should read Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White, preferably at least once as a child and once as an adult. In all my years as a reader, I’ve yet to find another book that captures what it means to be a friend as elegantly and succinctly as this classic. It’s the book that made me a reader!

Best TV show you’ve watched recently?

TV has always been my weak spot (huge rewatcher over here), but I loved the most recent series of The Traitors. Rob Rausch genuinely deserves an Emmy for how well he played that game.

Best movie you’ve watched recently?

I finally got my act together and watched both Dune and Dune: Part Two, and wow, they definitely lived up to the hype. Nobody broods like Timothée! Plus, I’m really happy I can now enjoy all the hype leading up to Dune: Part Three

A hidden gem you wish more people knew about?

The 10th Kingdom, a fairytale fantasy miniseries that aired on NBC way back in 2000. Pretty sure my dad, sister, and I are the only people in the world who watched it, even though it had a star-studded cast. (John Larroquette! Ed O’Neill! Dianne Wiest!) If your interest is piqued, it’s streaming on Prime Video.

Podcast on your weekly rotation?

I’ve been listening to Why Won’t You Date Me? with Nicole Byer since it launched back in 2017, which is pretty wild to type out. The podcast started as her quest to figure out why she was still single, and now that she’s found love (yay!), it’s more about dating and relationships in general. (Nicole, if you see this, I love you!)

Pix: Let’s start off with our most controversial question: what page-to-screen adaptation is actually better than the book?

GN: At the risk of sounding like every 20-year-old film bro, The Godfather. The original novel by Mario Puzo is a great read—it’s fun, fast, and absorbing—but the movie is a masterpiece.

Pix: As a proud Swiftie (and fellow cat mom), which book would you recommend Taylor Swift pack for her honeymoon?

GN: Okay, I’m almost certain she’s already read this one, but on the off chance she hasn’t: Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. First, we know she loves audiobooks, and this one is phenomenal. Second, Daisy Jones is famously inspired by Stevie Nicks, one of Taylor’s idols and close friends, who even performed at her wedding. Third, the novel explores music, fame, identity, and what it takes for love to survive it all—topics that feel right up Taylor’s alley. And fourth? I have a sneaking suspicion Travis would enjoy listening, too.

Pix: Before joining Pix Media, you spent years working in publishing. What is one part of the book publishing process that would shock readers?

GN: Oooh, there’s honestly so much. But probably the biggest surprise is how long it takes to publish a book after a manuscript is acquired. It can take anywhere from one to three years!
