Hi, {{first_name | friend}}!
Independent Bookstore Day is April 25, which means there’s no better excuse to walk into your local bookstore, impulse-buy more than you planned, and ask whoever’s at the counter what they’re reading. Today we’ve curated the most underrated books worth reading, iconic page-to-screen adaptations, and the TV shows that actually lived up to the novels they’re based on.
Some great books slip past the bestseller lists. The good news is, indie bookstores keep championing them. These are the reads worth asking your bookseller about.

Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson
Marilynne Robinson won the Pulitzer Prize for Gilead, but her debut novel is the one bookworms keep recommending to their friends. It follows two orphan sisters raised by their eccentric aunt in small-town Idaho. It's been quietly shaping literary fiction for forty years, but many readers still haven’t heard of it.

Marcus Whitman Hotel
The Vibe: A wine tourist’s dream
The Location: Walla Walla, WA
Instaworthy Accommodations:
The tallest building in Walla Walla by city ordinance, The Marcus Whitman Hotel has stood above this wine country town since 1928. Rooms in the Historic Tower and newly renovated West Wing balance genuine period character with modern comfort. The real draw, though, is what’s inside: four on-site tasting rooms give guests access to the best of the Walla Walla wine scene without leaving the building. After the tastings, step into The Marc Bar for elevated farm-to-table cuisine, craft cocktails, and sommelier-curated wine flights in an atmosphere that's straight out of a Golden Age Hollywood film.
Swing by an indie bookstore this weekend to pick up a book that inspired one of these iconic adaptations.

Little Women
Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation rearranges Alcott's novel, cutting between the March sisters’ girlhood and adulthood, offering a fresh take on the classic story. Plus, the casting is perfect: Saoirse Ronan as Jo, Florence Pugh as Amy, Timothée Chalamet as Laurie. It really is a must-watch.

RIPLEY
Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley has been adapted a handful of times. Netflix’s take starring Andrew Scott is the closest anyone’s gotten to the book’s icy, interior menace. If you’re not in the reading mood, this series is the closest you’ll get to experiencing the book.
